Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

A deep cleaning is the primary non-surgical treatment for gum disease — it removes bacterial deposits from below the gum line.

What Is Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)?

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a non-surgical periodontal treatment that cleans below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar from tooth roots, and smooths root surfaces to make it harder for bacteria to reattach. It's the standard first-line treatment for moderate periodontitis (gum disease). Unlike a routine cleaning that addresses the visible crown and just below the gum margin, SRP reaches deep into periodontal pockets (typically 4mm or deeper).

How It Works

The area is numbed with local anesthesia. The hygienist or periodontist uses hand scalers and ultrasonic instruments to remove deposits from the root surfaces. The procedure is usually split into two appointments (one side of the mouth per visit). A follow-up evaluation at 4–6 weeks assesses healing and pocket reduction.

Key Benefits

  • Stops active gum disease without surgery in many cases
  • Reduces pocket depths and controls bacterial infection
  • Reduces inflammation linked to heart disease and diabetes
  • Saves teeth that might otherwise require extraction
  • Most insurance plans cover SRP when clinically indicated
