Periodontal Pocket Reduction Surgery

When non-surgical treatment isn't enough, pocket reduction surgery eliminates deep pockets where bacteria hide.

What Is Periodontal Pocket Reduction Surgery?

Periodontal pockets are spaces between the tooth and gum created by gum disease. Shallow pockets (1–3mm) are normal; pockets deeper than 5mm often can't be adequately cleaned even with deep cleanings. Pocket reduction surgery (osseous surgery) provides direct access to root surfaces and the underlying bone, allowing thorough cleaning and reshaping of the bone to eliminate pockets and prevent disease progression.

How It Works

The periodontist numbs the area, makes incisions to reflect the gum flap, removes deposits from root surfaces under direct vision, reshapes any irregular bone contours, and sutures the gum tissue at a lower level to eliminate the pocket depth. A soft diet and modified home care are needed during the 2–4 week healing period.

Key Benefits

  • Accesses depths unreachable by non-surgical instruments
  • Eliminates pocket environment where bacteria thrive
  • Can reshape bone defects to improve long-term stability
  • Stops progression of bone loss around teeth
  • Saves teeth that might otherwise be lost to advanced periodontitis
